What was the Interurban? In its heyday during the early 1900s, Indiana’s interurban rail network was one of the most extensive in the nation, linking hundreds of towns and cities across the state.

Sleek electric cars carried passengers and goods along more than 2,400 miles of track, connecting rural communities like Delphi to bustling urban centers like Indianapolis, Lafayette, and Fort Wayne.

The interurban made travel faster, easier, and more affordable than ever before, fueling economic growth and social connection. For many Hoosiers, it represented progress and modernity — a symbol of Indiana’s place at the forefront of America’s transportation revolution.
